Animal Farm
by George Orwell
I have heard much praise of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and I finally decided to check it out. Often enough I have seen this book on several individual’s top ten list of books. When picking up Animal Farm, to much of my surprise, it only consisted of 94 pages. By my simple logic, a good book should at least be 200 pages. Could it be, that perhaps my reason is… dare I say it – inaccurate? Animal Farm is about a coup d’état of animals against human beings. Once taken over, the farm named, surprisingly, ‘Animal Farm’, is run by animals, and Mr. Jones is kicked out of his humble abode. Written during the rise of World War II, Orwell brilliantly describes an imaginary society of animals. Animal Farm is an allegorical book with undeniable parallels to politics, monarch and mankind in general. Yet, I still have no clue as to why this book is highly valued amongst people today. Not to be mistaken, I did enjoy it; but I thought it was too simple. But perhaps its simplicity is the shining feature of this book. Anyhow, this book, although short, is a nice book worth checking out (if your English teacher has not already forced you to read it). Animal Farm has shown a more-than-true message underlying its print that can be summarized in a maxim of three simple words: ‘Man are pigs.’ ('Men' as in mankind in general.) - Bobo
